Scarlino Festival represents an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of one of the most picturesque medieval towns of Tuscany. Country of Roman origin, the center of Scarlino is perched on the mountainside of Monte d’Alma and is dominated by a fortress dating from the X century.
Several theories animate the origin of the name of Scarlino: the first one traces it to Scabris Portus (referred to the landing near Puntone in Roman time), the second one refers to the Lombard Scherl (in relation to the dominant position of all plain). Despite a rather troubled history, Scarlino have a medieval aspect where some particular sites are easily recognizable: the Castle, now known as Rocca Pisana following the restructuring that took place during the rule of Pisa, the Church of San Donato dating from the XII century and characterized by a plant cross with an ancient nave (the perfect balance between the Gothic and Romanesque), the Church of San Martino, whose bell is dated 1340 and was renovated in 1700, the town hall, the door of Siena and the remains of walls not far from Piazza Garibaldi.
The area of Scarlino, however, is very varied and extends up to the coast, where the tourist port of Marina di Scarlino is still one of the most important tourist destinations like Cala Violina and Cala Martina.
La Cianella is situated on the hill of Scarlino and from the roof terrace you can appreciate the beauty of the landscape in the course of the day, when the ever changing colors give the chance to take a walk or bike along the paths while savoring a postcard scenery before refreshing in the sea, just 7 km far.
