Maremma has an extraordinary number of features which lend themselves to tourist excursions. Its countryside, still tied to country life, is considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. The vegetation is characteristic of Mediterranean scrub, examples of this being the pine forests, the mastic trees, strawberry trees and myrtle.
The history of Maremma evokes images of cowboys and herds of horses, limpid pools, carbon-burners in the forest and the wintering of flocks but also walled towns, the typical atmosphere of the rural landscape, Etruscan relics and the sea and beaches, the destination for tourists coming from every part of the world.
One of these many beaches is Cala Violina, taking its name from the violin-like sounds it makes when you walk on its fine white quartz sands. It is thought of as the first Italian Caribbean beach and it can only be reached on foot, making it even more fascinating and enchanting.
It is situated to the south of Forlonica and to the north of Punta Ala forming part of the Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve, a splendid series of hills climbing to just over 200 metres above sea-level and covered by an extensive network of paths making it possible to visit the woods and Mediterranean bush even in winter.
That is not to forget the famous island of Giglio! With the island of Giannutri it makes up the “Isola di Giglio” local authority, representing one of the most important tourist areas of the Maremma coast. The island faces the Argentario promontory in the Province of Grosseto, forming part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
Indeed, there are many natural areas and parks in the Region of Tuscany and tourism has grown considerably over recent years due to the need to create and live in natural and uncontaminated spaces in a world increasingly dominated by stress and the frenetic pace of life. The protected areas are able to bring people closer to nature, taking them back to a tranquil and relaxed life helping to promote physical and mental well-being.
